High Meadows’ history is rich with accounts of both innovation and dedication to one goal – creating a learning environment where a child can flourish as a unique individual. In 1973, High Meadows moved to its present site at the former residence of Mr. and Mrs. Nat Franklin. The Founders - Jody Holden, Bill Crawford, Jay Dickerson, and Mike Drake - began High Meadows by offering preschool, kindergarten, and camp programs to North Metro Atlanta’s children. In honor of our 40 sprawling acres and elevation, the school was named High Meadows.
The founders embraced a core set of beliefs about children which have served as a constant set of guiding principles over the years.
The High Meadows Community believes childhood is a distinct stage of life marked by a compelling drive to learn. We promote children’s engagement with the world through discovery, conversation, and play.
The High Meadows Community recognizes that children deserve understanding and respect, and that through their actions, they seek belonging and significance.
The High Meadows Community understands that children learn and mature in different ways and at different paces. The intentional blending of developmental stages within a classroom enhances the growth of the individual child.
The High Meadows Community supports children to develop intrinsic motivation, to take ownership of their learning, and to experience wonder and joy.
The High Meadows Community engages with the natural environment consciously, respectfully, and purposefully. This empowers our community to appreciate and to inhabit the earth responsibly.
The High Meadows Community understands, respects, and appreciates the differences among its members. We believe these attitudes enable individuals to act as compassionate, responsible members of our global society.
The High Meadows Community expects the broad-based participation and support of families, as this is essential to fulfilling our mission. All members commit to open communication and constructive dialogue.
High Meadows has continued to grow, not only in size, but also in recognition as a school of excellence. New buildings and classrooms were added over the years, allowing for growth in the Primary, Elementary, and Middle Years’ programs. In 1993, the school celebrated its first graduating 8th grade class.
