High Meadows School has been a recognized leader in environmental awareness, conservation and advocacy since the school’s founding in 1973. We believe that a connection to the natural environment is critical to our children’s ability to be responsible, global citizens. With that in mind, Environmental Education is a vital component of our curriculum and we promote a schoolwide commitment to active stewardship, including:
Recycling and compost containers in buildings and classrooms, making it highly convenient to recycle and compost what would otherwise be thrown away.
Encouragement and a preference for reusable lunch containers over disposable materials.
Hot lunch vendors required to avoid the use of Styrofoam containers and reduce over-packaging individual lunches.
A policy of “pack-in and pack-out” for all food, dishes and utensils at school sponsored events and activities.
Use of reusable plates, cups and napkins is encouraged on campus.
A policy of shutting down computers at night and turning off lights when not in use to reduce heat and save energy.
Rain barrels to capture precipitation and hydrate plants on campus.
Pest management that uses fewer chemicals.
A campus-wide “no idling” policy to reduce air pollution.
Encouragement of electronic communications in lieu of paper communications whenever possible to reduce usage of paper, toner and ink.
A commitment to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for all new construction on campus. LEED is the recognized standard for measuring a building’s environmental impact and sensitivity.
A full-time Environmental Education Specialist and a Sustainability Sub-committee under the Board of Directors.
