Community Service: 2009-2010 School Year

Haiti Efforts

Help Haiti CommitteeMiddle Years students formed a “Help Haiti Committee”. The students brainstormed and formulated plans to raise funds for those in need post earthquake. The students sold bracelets and provided funding to fuel a plane of medical supplies to Haiti.

1st/2nd graders held a marketplace in connection with their IB/PYP unit of inquiry on markets. Funds raised went to purchase a Shelter Box for Haiti and a donation was made to a NGO with focus on children.

4th/5th graders raised funds for Haiti via multiple bake sales. Funding will sponsor 4 students ($300 each for the year) at the John Bran Chizio School in Haiti through an organization called Mercy and Sharing. The funds provide uniforms, tuition, and books for the year. Additionally, High Meadows students will correspond with the students at the Chizio School next year. The community is making plans to continue this effort next year.

Two students raised money at home to give to Meds and Food for Kids (http://mfkhaiti.org/).

Environmental Efforts

SEA (Students for Environmental Action) are High Meadows students in the 4th/5th grade and they have participated in multiple environmental service projects again this year.

  • SEA did a litter pickup along the roadside of Willeo Road.
  • In conjunction with the City of Roswell, they attached “DO NOT DUMP in STORM DRAINS” signs on storm drains at a local subdivision.
  • SEA laid tree mulch at Zoo Atlanta (www.zooatlanta.org).
  • They also participated in the National program Adopt-a-Stream (www.adopt-a-stream.org) with the City of Roswell.
  • SEA participated in Family Fun Night with the Chattahoochee Nature Center (www.chattnaturecenter.org) promoting their Nature Exchange Program.

The Spanish program and Environmental Studies program worked collaboratively in an exchange program called TreePals (www.treepals.org). Tree Pals promotes tree planting projects and educational exchange opportunities between different countries.

Students participated in Monarchs across Georgia (www.monarchsacrossga.org) which “works together with teachers, students, families, communities, businesses and others to study Monarch butterflies and restore butterfly habitat across the state.” Milkweed is planted each year at High Meadows to promote Monarch migration.

High Meadows students (4th/5th graders) were part of the Junior Naturalists Team at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC). These students volunteer to give up meadow time to research an animal that lives at the CNC, train with CNC naturalists and act as a “tour guide” naturalist at least 2 times in the spring at CNC for school groups. This program provides opportunities to give students leadership and community service experience in the environmental field.

Students have been encouraged and provided opportunities to be citizen scientists by observing local phenomena and reporting it to US scientists. The list of opportunities includes:

  • Firefly Watch
  • Lost Lady Bug Project
  • Georgia Conservancy Photo Swap
  • Steps YOU Can Take to Fight Global Warming -- plus calculate your carbon footprint
  • Great Backyard Bird Count
  • Celebrate Urban Birds
  • Project Monarch Health
  • Bee Hunt from Discover Life
  • Matter of Trust -- Hair & Nylon Recycling for Oil Spills

A 4th grader is taking action based on his Emphasis study of Jane Goodall and her Roots and Shoots program (www.rootsandshoots.org). This student will lead an effort at High Meadows to promote care and concern for animals. The Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots program will begin in the fall of 2010.

High Meadows families water, weed, and pick produce one or two weeks during the summer. Produce is taken to North Fulton Charities as part of the national Plant-a-Row for the Hungry Program (http://www.acfb.org/projects/community_garden/plant_a_row). High Meadows donates about 100 pounds of produce each year.

1st and 2nd graders raised awareness on campus to support the protection of rainforest resources and raised funds to purchase/protect a section of the rainforest - Rainforest Alliance (www.rainforest-alliance.org).

Additional Efforts

Middle Years students coordinated a benefit concert to provide funds to Heifier International (www.Heifer.org).

3rd graders held awareness campaigns here on campus and raised funds to support the Mossy Foot Project, TOMS shoes (www.toms.com).

The Denning/Hunter class held a talent show to raise money for KIVA microloans (www.kiva.org) and have been loaning money to different people from all over the world for sustainable income projects all year.

The Albert/Williams preschool class led an effort that provided snacks to Children’s Development Association of Roswell (www.cdakids.org). The Preschool and Kindergarten classes participated in this effort.

The High Meadows Community provides clothing donations to different charities. Shoe donations are collected and taken to the Roswell Recycling center to be given to those in need called Shoes for the Cure (http://shoesforthecure.com/Shoe_for_The_Cure/Welcome.html). Shoes and extra t-shirts are donated to North Fulton Charities.

High Meadows sponsors an annual blood drive with the American Red Cross (www.redcrossblood.org).

High Meadows staff members participate annually in a Poinsettia raffle to raise monies for the Salvation Army Toy Collection at the Jingle Jog (www.jinglejog.com).
