Third Grade Curriculum

*Please note that for the 2016-17 school year we are excited to be returning to a fully-integrated multiage model in which we will offer combined Kindergarten/First Grade and Second/Third Grade classes with two lead teachers per homeroom.

Literacy and Language Arts

Students in Third Grade encounter the joy in reading as their increased mastery allows them to apply their skills to larger and more complex texts.  A balance of literature circles, teacher reads, and individual student choices provide opportunities for further skill development, literary analysis, and mentor texts for writing. Students go from learning to read to reading to learn and our classrooms provide a rich print environment with continually rotating titles to match our units of inquiry.

Reading also provides authentic models to enrich our Writing Workshop which has students writing informational, persuasive, and fiction pieces on self-selected topics. Third-graders reinforce their literacy skills by pairing up with Kindergarten "reading buddies", with whom they meet regularly throughout the school year. Using Handwriting Without Tears, a multi-sensory approach to teaching letter formation, third graders develop cursive handwriting skills which are applied daily in journaling and other skill practice.


Everyday Mathematics, developed by the University of Chicago, provides the framework for High Meadows students to learn and practice math skills and use them to reason and problem-solve. Physical models help students connect concrete and abstract mathematical concepts including: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations, fractions, measurement and data, and geometry. Computing, writing, modeling, and discussing problems allows an opportunity for students to expand their mathematical understanding.
