Information and Technology Literacy

The High Meadows Library Program provides students and teachers with print and digital resources for inquiry research in addition to wonderful books that our readers just can’t put down. The library is also home to our digital production lab.

Central to the program are our Information and Technology Literacy instruction classes. The ITL classes integrate technology, information and literacy experiences, and are taught by the librarians and technology integration specialist teachers.

Early Years

Preschool and Pre-K classes

Each preschool class has weekly story time in the library with a librarian. The students sit with the librarian in our reading area and enjoy books, poems, and songs. They discuss authors, illustrators, and elements of stories.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade classes

These classes visit the library for an hour each week and have small group instruction with a librarian and a technology integration specialist. The students work in all areas of the library including the reading area, instructional area, and the digital production lab. They have units of instruction on systems of organization, reader’s advisory, and elements of research. Within each unit, the students integrate technology based tools and strategies to create new works and share their learning. At this age, the students use iPads as their primary device. Additionally, students have time to independently browse the book and magazine collection and check out materials.

Elementary Years

Third through fifth grade classes meet in the library each week for instruction with a librarian and a technology integration specialist. The students work in all areas of the library including the reading area, instructional area, and the digital production lab. They have units of instruction on systems of organization, reader’s advisory & reflecting on reading, and tools & strategies for inquiry based research. In addition to the library’s print resources, the students use PCs, laptops, and iPads to organize their learning, conduct research, and create presentations. Each week there is dedicated time to independently browse the book and magazine collection and check out materials.

Middle Years

Middle Years students have the opportunity to take digital productions classes as mini-courses in the library. They collaborate with peers and teachers outside of the class to identify real-world issues and problems. The students then design projects to address these problems, using multi-media tools to support and share their work. These tools include video production, animation, 3-D printing, and digital photography. Click here (insert link to brochure) to read about mini-courses offered throughout the year.

Additionally, all Middle Years students participate in workshops at the beginning of the year to support our BYOD program. The orientation workshops include a discussion of responsible use of technology, support for using their personal device to access school resources and share content, and elements of digital citizenship.
