Middle Years (Grades 6-8)

Middle Years

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade

It is possible to LOVE middle school! We see it every day as our Middle Years students navigate the waters of adolescence in a school community where they are supported, nurtured, challenged, and loved.

Middle school students at High Meadows are encouraged to take risks, try new things, learn through experience, and embrace a growth mindset. Within an academic program that is both rich and rigorous, our teachers focus on authentic learning, reflection, and growth. Our graduates not only excel in high school, they carry with them an appreciation for their own talents, gifts, and abilities and a commitment to making a positive impact in the world around them.

Learn More About Our Student Outcomes

A Community of Learners

Our middle school classrooms are lively—filled with conversation, collaboration, and creativity. Teachers value students as individuals, nurturing self-awareness and empowering them to take responsibility for their learning. As students engage in increasingly abstract and sophisticated knowledge development, they expand their ability to manipulate and connect ideas and apply knowledge to solve problems and critically evaluate issues. Students create lasting relationships, developing leadership and cooperative skills through a variety of community service projects, class trips and other programs that bring them together for a common goal.

Whole Student Focus

Children thrive most when their physical, social, emotional, and academic needs are all considered and honored in their daily school experience. Adolescents are no exception! High Meadows middle school students are respected as learners, community members, and individuals capable of great things. Their development and growth are supported by the intentional integration of physical movement, time for building social connections, counseling support, and mindfulness practices alongside academic work. High Meadows teachers utilize Positive Discipline principles to assist with classroom management and individual growth, with a focus placed on problem-solving and self-awareness rather than punishment and rewards.

Why Middle School Matters

Watch episodes from our parent education series called, Why Middle School Matters. featuring Matt Nuttall (Middle Years Principal) and Anne Lovatt (Middle Years Social Studies teacher and HMS Alumna Class of 1996), who share their reflections and knowledge on adolescence, teaching, and learning in our Middle Years program. Learn how High Meadows makes this fascinating and complicated time in the lives of our students full of joy and growth.

Mini-Courses

At High Meadows, our students dive into a variety of exciting electives called mini-courses. These classes introduce new passions and nurture existing interests, making learning a joyful adventure.

Students explore diverse subjects like debate, music, technology, theater, fine arts, outdoor living, and more. With 12 mini-courses completed each year, every day is filled with fun and discovery.
