Barnyard Animals

High Meadows Barnyard Program

Horses and Chickens and Pigs, Oh My!

High Meadows is home to dozens of animals, including horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, pigs, chickens, and guineafowl. Our Barnyard program teaches students to interact with and care for the animals and the wildlife surrounding us on campus in a positive and respectful way. By working directly with our domesticated animals, students learn about animal behavior, physical care, egg development/hatching, force-free training, and enrichment.

Meet the menagerie of animals at High Meadows

List of 6 items.

  • Chickens

Students feed the chickens, collect the eggs, and sometimes even make homemade quiches with them to enjoy for a special lunch.
  • Goats

Children visit the animals regularly to develop confidence and comfort with them. Teachers and our animal care specialists share information about the animals and how to care for our furry/feathery friends properly.
  • Horses and Ponies

Little Moon turned 30 in March of 2024! Did you know that 30 horse years equals 85.5 human years?! We are fortunate that so many generations of High Meadows children have benefited from the joy of loving on Little Moon. He is just one of several horses and ponies
that are part of our Barnyard program.
  • Pigs

Pre-K through Third Grade students interact with the animals regularly with pony rides and animal care opportunities. Fourth and Fifth Grade work together to care for the animals and enhance their habitats. Optional mini-courses for Middle Years students, include animal care and an environmental project that involves our animals.
  • Rabbits

Being with animals teaches children to love and appreciate all that animals have to offer to us personally and to humankind. Our bunnies help children practice gentle handling.
  • Sheep

In the Barnyard program, students learn about life cycles and the many ways we benefit from animals. The wool we sheer from the sheep is used in our fiber arts class, where students learn felting, wool dying, how to spin wool into yarn, and more. They learn to appreciate that the scarf they knit and wear all started with the care and feeding of our resident sheep.

Beyond the Barnyard

Visiting Birds, Bees, Butterflies, and more!

Native milkweed attracts Monarch Butterflies every year when they migrate from Mexico to lay eggs. Students delight in watching the metamorphosis from larvae to caterpillars to chrysalis to butterflies! High Meadows also has bluebird boxes made from gourds we plant each year. A local bee club educates us about the bees that pollinate our lovely gardens and produce delicious honey.
The High Meadows community celebrates and perpetuates each individual’s quest for knowledge and skill, sense of wonder, and connection to the natural environment. We empower each to be a compassionate, responsible, and active global citizen.
