Mini-Courses

Mini-Courses highlight the diversity of interests and opportunities in the Middle Years.

Middle schoolers at High Meadows propose new ideas for mini-courses and choose to participate in the courses that best suit their interests and talents. Most courses run for six weeks. Some offerings, including Advanced Band and Advanced Debate, require a year-round commitment. Band, Debate, and Theatre Arts productions also involve after-school time. Course offerings always include a variety of options covering key subject areas, including visual arts, theatre arts, outdoor education, PE/wellness, animal care, and technology.

Featured Mini-Courses

Debate

The High Meadows Debate program has won 20 state championship titles since it started in 2003. The program teaches public speaking, critical reading, and analytical thinking skills. Over half of middle school students participate in debate by the end of 8th grade. The High Meadows Debate team participates in competitive policy debate giving students a chance to debate the topic or "resolution" that is debated by high school and middle school teams across the country during the academic year. Students in debate collaborate to research the current topic, refine their arguments, hone their speaking skills, and prepare for monthly competitions against schools from across the state. Debate gives High Meadows students the chance to compete against a diverse group of students across the state and develop a greater understanding of current events and policy issues while they make lifelong friendships.

Music Ensembles

The High Meadows music program offers a diverse range of ensembles designed to inspire and cultivate musical talent at every level. Starting with the 5th Grade Band, young musicians embark on their musical journey, learning fundamental skills and gaining their first ensemble experience. The Advanced Band challenges more experienced students, refining their technique and expanding their repertoire across various genres. For those with a passion for contemporary music, the Rock Band provides an exciting opportunity to explore modern styles and perform popular hits. Together, these ensembles create a vibrant and supportive environment where students can grow as musicians and performers.

Multiage Theatre Performance

The Theatre Arts program is highlighted each year by a full-length after-school production created and performed by High Meadows students in fourth through eighth grades. Students can audition for a role or apply to be on the Managerial Team, and all participate in playwriting (sometimes songwriting), costume and set design, sound and lighting tech, and more.

Study Skills/Wellness

Middle Years teachers emphasize and reinforce good study habits and subject-specific study skills.

Our updated Study Skills program runs for six weeks, two periods each day during Mini-Course time for Grades 6, 7 and 8. Each grade has its own program, but all include: time management, organization, note taking, swimming, PE/yoga, health lessons, art/theatre, team building,  reading comprehension, test taking strategies, writing, and foundational technology skills, among other elements.

List of 3 items.

  • 6th Grade Study Skills

In addition to swimming, PE/yoga, health lessons, art/theatre, team building, reading comprehension, test taking strategies, writing, and foundational technology, the study skills course in sixth grade focuses primarily on basic organizational skills such as time management, record keeping, filing systems, effective use of textbooks, note-taking, expansion of reading ability, and the use of non-fiction reading strategies such as SQRRR. Two of the weekly lessons are spent reviewing basic grammar concepts, proper usage, and the conventions of written English.
  • 7th Grade Study Skills

Seventh Grade Study Skills expands on the base knowledge from sixth grade with more emphasis on how one studies for “ownership” of information. Students review the basic skills and practice using them with the goal of embedding good study practices and increasing their engagement with the learning process.
  • 8th Grade Study Skills

The study skills course in eighth grade reviews and practices the skills from sixth and seventh grades, but the emphasis is on understanding the process of learning, how the brain works, and how one studies and learns more independently.

In all three grades, students explore some learning theory related to learning styles and multiple intelligences and role play to gain a firmer grasp of how they can maximize their personal strengths to empower and maximize learning. All skills that are introduced or practiced in study skills are also taught through daily classroom instruction. Teachers in all courses expand on students’ ability to study effectively by expecting students to implement good study practices. Throughout the school year classroom teachers also introduce subject-specific study skills as they introduce material.

All Middle Years teachers keep abreast of current research about learning and are aware of their students’ particular learning styles. Teachers often present material in ways that they know will enable students to develop effective study skill strategies and will embed a solid base of good practices that can be used throughout their academic careers.
