Fourth/Fifth Grade Curriculum

Literacy and Language Arts

Fourth and Fifth Grade students explore a variety of texts and are encouraged to reach beyond their favorite type of reading to discover more genres: biography, historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, folktales/myths, and poetry. Novel studies are chosen to complement our units of inquiry and provide important perspectives to historical events. A wealth of non-fiction titles compliment reading instruction, providing the basis for gaining new knowledge related to our units of inquiry. As Elementary students learn to analyze the structure of literature, they also practice their writing through the Writing Workshop model. Students write opinion, information, and narrative pieces as they learn to see the world as a writer.

Elementary students use mathematic skills to reason, problem-solve and reinforce prior concept development with physical models and meaningful experiences. The program is supplemented with a variety of materials that allow for application and enrichment of mathematical concepts including: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations, fractions and decimals, measurement and data, and geometry. Mathematics instruction includes small group work, exemplars, math centers, direct instruction, math conferencing, applied mathematics and mathematical discourse.
