Maintenance Facility Named in Honor of Neil M. Gibson, a Beloved Member of the School Community for Two Decades
ATLANTA/ROSWELL – May 6, 2016 – High Meadows School, an independent, International Baccalaureate® (IB) school focused on progressive education for students in preschool through eighth grade, will host a special dedication and ribbon cutting for the opening of its newest campus building on May 19 at 10 a.m. Community members, faculty, staff and parents are welcome to attend.
Named for a beloved fixture among the High Meadows community and in honor of his passing in 2014, the Neil M. Gibson Maintenance Facility will open at the base of campus along Willeo Road. In keeping with High Meadows’ guiding principles, the Building Committee worked with the architect to keep the environmental impact minimal. The building was strategically sited to minimize tree impact and pull service-related traffic off campus. Its green building features include low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency HVAC and LED lighting to maximize energy efficiency, and a green retaining wall will minimize heat island effect and carbon footprint.
“To say that Neil was an important part of the High Meadows community would be an understatement,” says Jay Underwood, head of school at High Meadows School. “Neil was a loving, creative presence who shared his gifts of poetry, photography, art and philosophy with everyone who knew him. He had a significant hand in building revered structures around our campus, and his beautiful photos of High Meadows grace our walls. Many treasured trees were planted by Neil, none more beautiful than the loquat in Memaw’s Garden, which bore fruit that he would turn into preserves and give away to all who appreciated a good jam.”
The new maintenance facility will provide a place for the school’s maintenance vehicles, tools and cleaning supplies. Large deliveries will be made here and the building will house the garbage dumpsters, all of which means an improved campus experience by reduced service vehicle traffic and noise.
