HMS Celebrates Cultural Traditions with A Walk Around the World
Every day, High Meadows School's faculty and staff teach students to develop a 360-degree worldview. A Walk Around the World: A Nationality Festival is one event that encourages students to consider different perspectives and embrace previously unfamiliar cultural traditions.
High Meadows is an accredited International Baccalaureate: Primary Years Programme for Pre-K through fifth grade. According to Danielle Wright, lower years assistant principal and director of equity and justice, “The themes of the IB Primary Years Programme are designed so that we do not teach through a tunnel vision lens, and our students have a complete worldview of topics. Their inquiry is then impacted by that worldview.”
For the third consecutive year, students in fourth through eighth grades were invited to present an aspect of their heritage at the festival, a student-designed event that Wright supports. The initial students who designed the event, now High Meadows graduates, wanted an opportunity for community members to share their cultures with each other.
All too often, we focus only on similarities as the things that bring us together. There is beauty in our differences, and those differences are worthy of celebration. A Walk Around the World provides elementary and middle school students an opportunity to showcase the uniqueness of their cultures. Every table at the festival is a different mix of posters, music, food, games, and other items and mementos specific to the cultures represented. The experience allows students to come together to share something special about their heritage.
“We normalize differences across cultures and create an awareness of how much more is in the world beyond what we see in front of us,” Wright noted.
