Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice at HMS

High Meadows School affirms our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) beliefs every day through our work with students, families, faculty, board members, and the community at large. We value a diverse community of belonging as essential to growth and learning. We engage our stakeholders in creating a more just and equitable world by empowering compassionate, responsible, and active global citizens.

  • Service Learning Projects

    Students volunteer for The Sandwich Project to help fight food insecurity, repair bluebird houses on campus, cook for local shelters, and more. Our school-wide commitment to service-learning projects includes every student on campus as they  investigate, plan, act, reflect, or demonstrate in ways that make a positive impact.
  • Cultural Awareness

    Walk Around the World – A Nationality Festival is an opportunity for students to display aspects of a nationality in their lineage. Students share their culture through games, informative displays, music, crafts, and more to engage and educate their peers.
  • A Sense of Belonging and Self

    Pre-K students explore identity during Chats for Change by reading the book From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea, which is about understanding and accepting differences.

Inclusion and Diversity Statement

The High Meadows community values and supports diversity in all its dimensions, including but not limited to each person’s unique combination of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical ability, learning style, religious beliefs, political views, perspectives, and life experiences.

By embracing diversity, we expand our understanding of others, stimulate our own learning and growth, and connect with one another and the world. Moving beyond simple tolerance builds a safe, positive, and nurturing environment that expands each individual’s enduring  sense of belonging and significance.

Equity and Justice Commitments

  1. Foster competent and confident faculty and staff ready to implement the HMS social justice initiatives
  2. Create a diverse community that is both engaged and inclusive
  3. Design bold and representative curricula, policies, and programming
  4. Articulate clear DEIJ commitments via internal and external messaging.
To uphold these commitments, we formed three groups comprised of multiple constituencies (board members, families, faculty, and staff). These separate but interconnected groups have a common mission of furthering HMS equity and justice initiatives.

  • Parent Equity and Justice Council

    The Parent Equity and Justice Council is a panel of equity-conscious HMS parents committed to advancing educational equity and justice at High Meadows. These parents also aim to foster a sense of belonging and community on campus. They serve as a sounding board and liaison for ongoing equity and justice initiatives; promote education and awareness to the HMS community around issues of diversity, education, inclusion, and justice; support the implementation of offerings and programs that inspire people to practice cultural competence, international mindedness, and leadership through service. The Council also connects with organizations that align with the HMS mission and Equity and Justice Commitments to create opportunities for equity and service partnerships.

  • Primary Years Programme and Academic Equity Leadership Team

    The Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Academic Equity (AE) Leadership Team consists of teachers from each grade level and the Connections program. They lead their team’s PYP meetings and coordinate PYP efforts in their grade level(s).

    Additionally, they assist team members in integrating equity and justice into the curriculum, share ideas that add to classroom libraries, and increase the visible representation of various identities in the school and in classrooms.

  • Board Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Committee

    The purpose of the DEIJ Board Committee is to assist the Board in discharging the Board’s responsibilities with:
    • The development of goals and strategies to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within the HMS community
    • The ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion education of trustees
    • Ensuring all board committees and strategic documents include diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
    • Keeping trustees apprised of diversity, equity, and inclusion actions and issues
    The DEIJ committee is composed of Board Trustees and the school’s Director of Equity and Justice.
