Adventures for Grades 6-8

Off-campus learning adventures are a hallmark of the High Meadows experience. Middle schoolers go on three trips, and each trip brings many opportunities for learning, growth, leadership, friendship, and exploration. These trips are designed to complement the curriculum as well as to provide students with team-building and relationship skills.

6th Grade: 5-day trip to Jekyll Island
7th Grade: 7-day trip to Williamsburg
8th Grade: 9-day trip to Colorado

Our off-campus trips reinforce the fact that middle school kids are great! HMS middle schoolers rise to the occasion and meet the expectations of the caring adults who believe in them for who they are. As ethical leaders engaged in active problem-solving, they are considerate, curious, and caring. Quick to stand up for people and our planet, they often become advocates for the local and global issues they learn about on the trips.

Matt Nutall, Middle Years Principal

One of the most common experiences we have when traveling with students is when strangers pull one of the chaperones aside to express their wonder, and often genuine shock, at just how thoughtful and respectful our students are when out in the world.

Jekyll Island

In February, our 6th-grade students journey to Jekyll Island for a 5-day immersive coastal ecology experience filled with hands-on learning and adventure. The trip begins with a visit to the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds, where students explore Native American history before continuing to the Georgia coast. Throughout the week, they engage in a variety of activities, including a behind-the-scenes tour at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, a guided trolley tour of the island’s historic district, and interactive beach studies focused on coastal ecosystems and marine life.

Students also experience Jekyll Island’s natural beauty firsthand, biking through scenic trails to Driftwood Beach and Sharks Beach while observing the region’s unique landscapes. Evening reflections provide opportunities for discussion and personal growth, reinforcing lessons about environmental stewardship and teamwork. This unforgettable trip encourages curiosity, independence, and a deeper connection to the natural world, creating lasting memories for our students.

Colonial Williamsburg

Each fall, our 7th-grade students step back in time as they travel to Colonial Williamsburg for an immersive 7-day exploration of early American history. The journey begins with a visit to Jamestown, where students tour the original settlement site and learn about the struggles and triumphs of America’s first permanent English colony. Throughout the week, they experience life in the 18th century by exploring Colonial Williamsburg’s historic streets, engaging with costumed interpreters, and participating in interactive programs such as Cry Witch and Revolutionary Points, which bring the past to life through dramatic reenactments.

Beyond Williamsburg, students visit the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Virginia, and embark on an American Rover sailing tour, offering a unique perspective on maritime history. A trip to Yorktown rounds out their historical studies, where they walk the battlefield and explore the museum dedicated to the Revolutionary War’s final major conflict.

Evenings are filled with engaging activities, including a Haunted Williamsburg tour, adding a thrilling element to the trip. Designed to deepen their understanding of history while fostering independence and responsibility, this memorable experience leaves students with a greater appreciation for America’s colonial past.

Students learn about American history while also learning about themselves and each other, how to get along, how to budget for the week, and how to manage their diets when traveling.

Colorado

Every spring, our 8th-grade students travel on an unforgettable 9-day adventure to Colorado, where they explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. Based at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, students spend a week hiking through diverse ecosystems, studying local wildlife, and gaining hands-on experience with geology and environmental science.

Daily hikes take them to stunning locations such as Cub Lake, Ouzel Falls, and Loch Vale, with elevations reaching over 10,000 feet. In addition to outdoor exploration, students have the opportunity to visit Trail Ridge Road for scenic views, explore Estes Park, and learn about regional history and culture. This immersive trip fosters resilience, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for the natural world, creating memories that last a lifetime.
