Eight Reasons to Choose High Meadows

Since 1973, High Meadows School has inspired children to learn and grow through joyful experiences, meaningful relationships, connection to nature, and deep thinking. These core values have guided us for more than 50 years and are central to our student experience.  Are you searching for a dynamic independent school for your child? Here are the top eight reasons you should choose High Meadows School! Come see High Meadows in action – Plan your visit today.
Preservation of Childhood
High Meadows School honors the experience of childhood and is a place of joy, wonder, and discovery. Play, movement, and curiosity are present in every grade level. Children are naturally curious, and our inquiry-driven approach allows them to explore their ideas and wonderings. A focus on experiential learning lets children view their education as a journey instead of an outcome. Our school days also allow for unstructured time for play, building friendships, and choice. We believe education should be joyful, meaningful, and powerful.

Connection to Nature & Outdoor Learning
Learning is an adventure across High Meadows’ 42 acres of meadows, woods, and farmland. Connecting with nature offers students a chance to learn and the opportunity for movement, fresh air, and critical thinking. Whether it is conducting a science experiment, planting in class gardens, caring for the barnyard animals, or hiking on the Shadow Fox Trail, the opportunities for preschool, elementary school, and middle school students to learn and play outdoors are plentiful. Connection to and preservation of the natural environment are a cherished part of our school’s mission statement.

Progressive Approach
Progressive education emphasizes experiential, inquiry-driven learning, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. It also embraces a “whole child” approach to education that places value on social/emotional development alongside academic. This model honors each student’s sense of wonder and values their voice. The result is confident and joyful thinkers, doers, and community members who have been empowered to make a difference. It’s no wonder our graduates go on to achieve amazing things like being published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution at just 16 years old!

Community
Relationships are at the heart of all we do. We value our diverse community and respect and appreciate the multi-dimensional identities of individuals within our community. Our families have a range of important perspectives, backgrounds, and beliefs. Every year, the HMS community gathers for picnics, campouts, service events, the Fall Festival and Meadow Mile, and numerous concerts, performances, and sporting events. Community extends beyond the school day with many opportunities for parents and guardians to meaningfully engage.

Student Voice and Choice
High Meadows students are empowered to be active participants in their learning. HMS takes an inquiry-driven approach to learning and encourages students to ask questions and embrace intellectual challenges, consider multiple perspectives, and discover the wonders of life through hands-on experience in the classroom and in nature. Students learn to pursue interests and advocate for themselves and others.

Whole Child Approach
When a child’s needs are met physically, socially, emotionally, and academically, they have what they need to thrive and flourish. From preschool through eighth grade, our talented faculty focus on the well-being of the entire child. High Meadows teachers use Positive Discipline principles to assist with classroom management and individual growth, with a focus placed on problem-solving and self-awareness rather than punishment and rewards.

Focus on Ethical Leadership
Our program equips students with the skills and habits of mind to enter the world as empathetic and passionate change-makers. The journey of a High Meadows student includes ample opportunity for critical thinking and problem solving, identifying inequities and injustices, advocating for people and the planet, and considering many perspectives. In short, our students care about the world beyond themselves and want to contribute to making it a better place.

Preparation for High School and Beyond
Middle school students are cognitively remarkable and capable of deep thinking and problem-solving. Our teachers see students as individuals who are continuously growing and learning. Our Middle Years Program provides students with an academic foundation across five core subjects – English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Spanish, and Science. High school credit can be earned in Spanish and math. Alongside core subjects, HMS faculty teach study skills and allow students to discover their passions through six-week mini-courses. High Meadows graduates thrive academically and are often ahead of their peers as they enter high school. Our students have attended some of the finest high schools and colleges across the country and go on to make a positive impact in the world.
