Why I Support the High Meadows Fund

By Leigh Borda P'30'31
One of the most rewarding aspects of watching my children learn and grow at High Meadows is witnessing them develop a strong sense of self through play.
Renowned educational researcher Peter Gray said, “Play is where children learn they are in control of their own lives.” In Pre-K, I observed my children gaining comfort being away from me, adapting to a new environment, and taking risks with their peers on the playground. As they progressed to kindergarten, their play evolved into adventurous hikes deep into the woods surrounding our campus, where they grew more confident in their physical abilities. They began to take responsibility for packing their forest bags and collaborating with classmates to solve challenges together. In first grade, during Meadow Time on the upper meadow, I saw them embrace greater freedom–climbing trees, jumping rope, and inventing new games with friends. Now, in the 2/3 class, they enjoy access to both the upper and lower meadows as well as the woods, engaging with peers of varying ages. They are not only solving problems and making choices but also negotiating and designing games that accommodate players of all ages and abilities.

Childhood at High Meadows is a remarkable experience, and this is no coincidence. The essence of our exceptional school is the result of intentional, strategic, and purposeful efforts by a dedicated team of educators who bring their passion and expertise to the classroom every day.

Our annual budget is designed to support our unique vision for education with a significant portion—61%—allocated directly to our devoted faculty. Their commitment is fundamental to our students’ success. Like many independent schools, our annual fund, the High Meadows Fund, is vital to the school’s financial health. As chair of the High Meadows Fund, I have seen how it enables us to attract and retain talented educators, respond promptly to emerging learning opportunities throughout the year, and provide students with the distinctive experiences that make our school the special place it is.

Last year, the High Meadows Fund facilitated essential upgrades to our campus, maintenance of our beautiful grounds, and the acquisition of innovative tools that empower our teachers to engage students in exciting, hands-on projects. These investments distinguish High Meadows as a unique and exceptional educational environment.

A High Meadows Fund contribution, no matter the amount, is more than just a donation; it’s an investment in our children for this school year. It helps cultivate adventurous, curious learners and empowers our remarkable educators to foster an environment rich in joy, diversity, and connection to nature.

I invite you to join me in making a tangible and meaningful difference to our school by donating to the High Meadows Fund at www.highmeadows.org/give_online.
